A warehouse should be designed keeping in mind a holistic approach. Storage is the most important process in a warehouse but it is not the only one. In addition to storage, inbound, outbound, internal movement, quality check and cycle count are some of the processes that majorly affect the warehousing activity.
Thinking of just the storage area instead of the entire warehouse could be a good approach if you’re not looking at a long-term warehousing solution. A long-term solution will be optimal and effective only when all the processes and factors are duly considered and planned by an experienced expert.

Warehouse is not all about racking systems. Lot of warehouses do not require racking systems at all. While thinking about warehousing the first and foremost is its location keeping in mind your product and the final reach. Next is support environment in terms of manpower pool and other amenities. Safety is the foremost thing to keep in mind while designing. While agility in processing has to be given importance the storage should be the last. But if you are designing anything for life saving drugs or food items storage is a very important aspect to maintain the ethicacy and stability of the product. So while designing a warehouse everything has to be taken into account. Cutting corners will lead to increase in time or cost in the final run

Companies face various challenges while storing their goods in a warehouse, despite having years of experience in product handling and customer outreach. The core challenge is that the companies get their racking infrastructure designed by renowned rack providers but overlook their other parts of the warehouse. Later, when they start facing space constraints while order processing they are forced to tweak their existing racking leading to an added investment of time and money.

It is recommended by the warehousing experts that we shouldn’t overlook the complete warehouse designing over the storage infrastructure. For an optimum storage and material flow, do design your warehouse considering each of your processes from inward to outward and don’t just work on the racking. As all of this is interconnected it will become a major challenge in the near future.
