Role of logistics providers is continuously evolving in India. In the last two decade, concept of 3PL has been widely accepted where the logistics providers act as single point of contact for customers various logistics needs.
Now companies are moving to 4 PL & 5PL formats as well where the logistics provider will act as extended logistics arm of the customer and will act as single point of contact. Some companies involve logistics players at strategy formulation stage as well.In such cases, role of logistics provider is not just limited to execution but they are largely involved in planning as well.

Different logistics service provider (LSP) have different capabilities and offerings. Some of the LSPs specialises in the specific function whereas some LSP provide end-to-end logistics services. Depending on the customer’s requirement the LSP responsibilities changes, overall it includes transportation, warehousing, inventory management & distribution solution. The LSP also offer value added services such as track & trace, cross-docking or specific packaging basis customer’s requirement.
